Miriam is currently a medical student pursuing a Doctor of Medicine degree. With many hours devoted to community service and a desire to help others, Miriam decided to continue her “Strings for Success: Healthy Habits and Harp” program during medical school.
She is passionate about basic healthy habits and presents them in a unique way through the strings of her harp. Miriam is dedicated to striving to improve people’s quality of life, and to provide education and empowerment for healthy living.
Strings for Success: Healthy Habits and Harp is a program for school-aged children that can be adapted for K-12th grade students. The behaviors and practices that children develop impact their overall health long-term. This program encompasses public health concepts of hygiene, wellness, and prevention. The program can be presented virtually or in-person if appropriate.
In the presentation, Miriam utilizes the harp strings, A-B-C-D-E-F-G, as an acronym to convey an easy-to-remember message about daily healthy practices: Attitude, Breathe, Clean Hands & Cough Etiquette, Drink Water, Eat Healthy, Fitness, and Gratitude.
For younger students, Miriam wrote a fictional story with animal characters that highlight each healthy habit. She encourages students to help act out the different characters in the story. For example, one of the characters is Babette the Bear, who is a yoga fan and practices proper breathing. When the story introduces Babette, the students practice yoga poses and proper breathing techniques. Miriam also developed an interactive Jeopardy-style game for upper-grade students where the students get into teams to answer health-related questions. The program can also be presented as a lecture with an accompanying PowerPoint presentation.
Miriam can also speak on additional topics: social media/technology usage, personal/professional presentation, skincare, civility, and organizational/study skill
